Aged 30

25th Company (Infantry), Machine Gun Corps
(enlisted in Newmarket as No.31043, Essex Regiment)
Killed in Action on Tuesday 31st July 1917

Born in Newmarket in Q2-1886 [Newmarket 3b:559] to George and Amy NOBLE (née GILLAM) of 1 Turf Terrace, All Saints Road, Newmarket. There is scope for confusion here since there were 2 George NOBLE, both with father George. Fortunately both sets of parents are named by CWGC. This man is Charles on the memorial

1891 census...George junr [5] was at 1 Turf Terrace, All Saints Road, Newmarket with his father George [30], a stableman born Newmarket; his mother Amy [26] born Scotland; sister Christina [7] born Scotland; sister Ruby [6 months] born Newmarket.

1901 census...George [14] a telegraph messenger was still at Turf Terrace with his parents; sister Ruby and now brothers Frank [8]; Percy [8 months] and sister Marion M [3], all born in Newmarket.

1911 census...George [24] a clerk, was still at 1 Turf Terrace with his parents, brother Frank and sister Marion and brother Colin William [7], born Newmarket. 3 of the 9 children had died.

As machine Gun Corps men were attached to so many different regiments and battalions, without his Army records it is impossible to say where Charles was killed . It was the first day of 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) and CWGC show 6,195 killed on that day in Belgium, 4,486 are recorded on the Menin Gate, and many others have no known graves, being recorded on other memorials
